Café Costume x The Broken Circle Breakdown

Real gentlemen: they’re rare but we found them at a vernissage in the Café Costume boutique in Ghent. Ghent’s gents are a species of their own. Even in a smart suit they never lose their stylish nonchalance.

The reason for our trip to Ghent was the opening of the exhibition of Thomas Dhanens, the set photographer of the movie The Broken Circle Breakdown. This film by Felix van Groeningen actually opened this year’s Ghent Film Festival last night.

Besides the photography, there was lots of room for fashion. Café Costume made the outfits for the actors and the boutique was turned into a tattoo shop for one of the scenes. Vincent was completely crazy about the ties and declared several times his love for tweed.

The band was really good and played the right kind of country music with a touch of folk. They gave that little extra flavour to the event, along with the extraordinary cocktails of course.

Marie from Oona (right) was so kind to introduce us to the photographer Thomas Dhanens himself (left) and we discovered he is also the one who shot the famous ‘naked bikers’ poster of ‘De Helaasheid der Dingen’. Still, the man was 0% pretencious and we had a great chat.

A special mention is needed for the shoes of Oona’s Nathalie. We were dazzled by all the sparkles. Don’t they match beautifully with the carpet?

Let’s say it took us quite a while to leave. Just when we thought we met all the interesting people inside, we discovered the other half of artsy Ghent was standing outside. Good job, Café Costume! By the way, ladies and gents: make sure to check out their website. It’s simply magnifiscent.
